Source: Waveland Independent Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana March 15, 1906

Mrs. Mary E. Penn Russell was born in Bourbon Co, Ky near Paris, Sept 28, 1828 and died at her home near Waveland, March 9, 1906 at almost the same age at which her husband, Dr. Joseph P. Russell passed away 13 years ago. She was the last of a family of children, her sister, Mrs. Charlotte McLoed dying Jan 26 of this year. She married Dr. Joseph P. Russell in Ky, Sept 3, 1845. Soon after they removed to Waveland and were among its first citizens both in point of time and influence. Mrs. Russell joined the Christian Church before coming to Indiana. When the congregation at Waveland was organized, both she and the Dr. were charter members and continued their fellowship with the same until death. To them were born 12 children. Three died in childhood. Four died in mature life: Alice, Mrs. Betty Penn, Mrs. Mollie Roberts and Joseph. Five survive: Mrs. Nora Groves of Waynetown; Misses Emma and Pauline, David and John Quincy. Mrs. Russell was devoted to the Church and was constant in her attendance. She always occupied the same seat and was a familiar figure. Another noticeable trait was her devotion to her children, and she felt deeply the loss of those who have gone before. In 1884 she contracted a deep cold from which she never recovered, and which no doubt brought on her death. For 20 years and more, while death was battling with her strong vitality, she was patient, uncomplaining and always cheerful. - kbz
